At 83, Evelyn lives independently in her own home with the support of RHS, DHI, and Remote Supports. A strong advocate for her independence, she has always enjoyed doing things for herself. In fact, she used to cut her own grass with a push mower.
Evelyn is currently using a tablet provided by Noble through a technology grant to work toward a personal goal she has had for many years: learning to read. She enjoys practicing on her tablet & continues to make progress toward this important goal.
Evelyn works two days a week at Goodwill. During her downtime, she enjoys listening to country music on the radio & creating crafts.
Evelyn grew up on a farm in Fair Oaks, Indiana, as one of 10 siblings. She has experienced many changes throughout her life. When she was very young, she remembers being taken from her family home & placed at New Castle State Developmental Center. Eventually, Evelyn left New Castle & connected with Noble in the 1970s. In the 1970s, Evelyn participated in the MCARC Apartment Living Project, where she developed greater independence & met her husband, Carl. Evelyn & Carl married in 1980 & eventually purchased their own home, where Evelyn continues to live today. Carl passed away in 2016.
Throughout her life, Evelyn has held a variety of jobs & contributed to her community. She worked for many years in the Noble Greenhouse, later worked at Kroger bagging groceries & bringing carts in from the parking lot, & eventually worked in the cafeteria at the University of Indianapolis.
Evelyn’s story is one of perseverance, independence, hard work & continued growth. At 83, she continues to set goals for herself, learn new skills, work, create & live life on her own terms.
